The install itself is short. The App Store shows how large the download is before it starts, the device signs off on it, and later versions arrive with the rest of the device's updates rather than needing to be looked for. An iPad on the same Apple ID picks the app up without a separate hunt for it.
The value of a personal device here is that it is not shared. A desktop in a living room is negotiated for; a phone is not. The same account is reached from both, so the choice on any given evening can be made on the basis of who else needs the computer rather than on where the setup happens to live.
Screen size is the honest trade. An iPhone is enough to follow a chart and check an account; an iPad gives room to look at more than one thing at once. Neither holds anything the other lacks, and moving between them is a matter of signing in, not of moving files.
